What’s happening

On October 21, Governor Bob Ferguson signed an order activating the Washington National Guard to state active duty for an “Election Neighborhood Watch,” and on October 23 he offered the mission to every county auditor in the state.

Seven counties accepted: Clark, Island, King, Lewis, Pierce, Snohomish, and Thurston. Spokane County declined. The mission began Monday, October 26, and runs until 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, November 10. Guard members are unarmed, in plain clothes, and assigned to observe — in some counties driving roving checks of drop boxes overnight — and to report anything suspicious to the county auditor and local law enforcement. They are not law enforcement, and they do not touch, handle, or process ballots.

Thurston County’s auditor described the role in a public statement: personnel “will serve in a purely supportive role to enhance our election infrastructure security,” operating directly under the auditor. The Washington Guard has also provided election cybersecurity support since 2016.

The threat this responds to

In October 2024, an incendiary device was set off in a ballot drop box in Vancouver, in Clark County, destroying hundreds of ballots days before the election. Ballot-box arson is the stated reason this mission exists: the watch is meant to catch tampering early and to reassure voters that boxes are being looked after.

What it means if you vote in Washington

If you vote in one of the seven counties, you will most likely not notice the watch at all — that is by design. Nothing about how you vote has changed: drop your ballot in any official box by 8 p.m. on Election Day, or vote at a voting center. If you want to know exactly what the Guard is doing in your county, your county auditor’s office can tell you; the mission runs under the auditor’s direction.
