Where we stand

A note on anti-Semitism

PoliVion tracks the money the pro-Israel lobby puts into American elections. When you publish numbers like these, sooner or later someone calls it anti-Semitism. So here is exactly where we stand.

This is about power, not religion

America was built on the separation of church and state — the idea that no religion gets to run the government, and the government doesn’t get to run religion. That separation is part of what makes this country what it is.

Our objection to AIPAC’s influence has nothing to do with Judaism. It has everything to do with this: a foreign country has built enormous power over both political parties, and through them over the American government itself.

That would be a problem no matter which country it was. It would be a problem no matter which religion anyone involved practiced — or whether religion was involved at all. This is a question of balance of power: who do our elected officials actually answer to — the voters who elected them, or the foreign lobby that funded them?

Criticizing a government is not hating a people

Israel is a government. Judaism is a religion, practiced by millions of people who hold a wide range of views about what that government does.

Many Jewish people — in America, in Israel, and around the world — do not agree with what the Israeli government is doing, and they have said so publicly. When criticism of a government’s actions gets labeled “anti-Semitism,” it doesn’t protect Jewish people. It uses them as a shield for policies that many of them oppose.

On Gaza

By the evidence and the accounts coming out of Gaza, we believe what is being done to the Palestinian people there amounts to genocide — even though no international court has formally ruled it as such yet.

We also believe it goes against the core values of the Jewish faith itself.

A foreign country doing something like this should not hold this much influence over American elections. That is not a complicated position.

One standard for everyone: we would say exactly the same thing about any country — any lobby, any religion, any flag — that built this kind of control over our politics while doing these kinds of things. The standard doesn’t change depending on who it is. That’s the whole point.
