Status
District of Columbia In person — Guard physically present near voting. National Guard activity reported
What’s happening
The D.C. National Guard is unlike every state Guard: it has no governor and answers to the president. Its members are deployed around Washington under orders that predate the election period, at federal buildings and public sites across the city.
On October 9, with voting open, armed Guard members were photographed at a ballot drop box at 23rd and I Streets NW in Foggy Bottom. The sighting is logged by the 50501 Vets Election Watch tracker, which follows reports of troops at voting locations.
No election-specific Guard mission has been announced for the District. The drop-box photograph is, so far, the only documented instance this cycle of armed soldiers at a ballot receptacle anywhere in the country.
The threat this responds to
The District’s Guard presence is a general security posture in the capital, not a response to a specific election threat that officials have announced. It is tracked here because it intersects with voting: in a city that votes heavily by mail and drop box, a standing armed deployment and a ballot box can end up in the same frame.
What it means if you vote in District of Columbia
D.C. votes by mail and in person at voting centers, which are operating normally. Guard members in the District are not assigned to check voters, handle ballots, or staff voting sites.
